African American Museum at Fair Park - Dallas, Texas

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

The African American Museum at Fair Park is a gallery of illuminating, captivating, and interesting collections and exhibits of rich cultural history. The African American Museum at Fair Park celebrates the legacy of African Americans and their contribution to Dallas, Texas’s yesteryear.

The African American Museum at Fair Park currently features permanent collections and new exhibits. My favorite collections are “The Freedman’s Cemetery Artifact Collection”, “The Dallas County Black Political Archives Collection” and the “22nd Annual Carroll Harris Simms Black Art Competition & Exhibit”. The museum also has a fascinating video resource center that focus on past interviews and documentaries from former residents who have lived Dallas history.

The “Freedman’s Cemetery Artifacts” collections are recovered relics from a 144 year old Dallas cemetery where newly freed African Americans honored their deceased loved ones. This collection was very interesting because of the different types of artifacts that were recovered from this cemetery. The collections included, original seashells, figurines and broken bottles that once belonged to the deceased. The “Freedman’s Cemetery Artifact Collections” also includes an actual replica of a gravesite.

The “Dallas County Black Political Archives” is a collection of documents related to prominent black political figures of Dallas County. The collection includes printed materials, records, artifacts and recorded activities of well-known black Dallas political figures. The “Dallas County Black Political Archives” displays an interesting account of African Americans involvement in the Dallas political arena and gives knowledge and background on how African Americans in Dallas made a difference in their community.

The newest collection is the “22nd Annual Carroll Harris Simms Black Art Competition and Exhibit”. The exhibit contains a wonderful collection of fine and modern art from various talented black artists. This collection was inspired to provide a venue for black artists to display their works. I strongly recommend viewing this collection, because it truly displays the exceptional talent and works of African Americans and their contribution to the art industry.

The “Billy R. Allen Folk Art Collection” is a permanent collection at the museum and is currently on display. This collection proudly displays works by David Butler, Ralph Griffin, Bessie Harvey and other talented artists.

The African American Museum has free admission and is open Tuesday-Sunday. The museum is beautifully designed with a court yard of sculptural displays and is a perfect outing for anyone looking to take a closer look at African American history in Dallas.
