When one of our three sons handed me the business card pictured below from Burger Island, my first thought was that we do not need another burger place. But the card was in color and well done. When the boys were out of the house at lunchtime when she was on vacation, Cyndy and I wanted something good and cheap. I pulled out the card and searched for Burger Island on the internet. They do not have a website, but there was a review on one of the citysearch sites. It was a fairly good review so I went to check it out.
It turns out I had driven by Burger Island a few days before. At the time I had the same thought I had when our son gave me the card - why do we need another burger joint. It is an unassuming building in an odd location where the city of Farmers Branch is expanding Beltline Rd. It was a little difficult to get into the parking lot which is not very large. Walking inside the restaurant it looks like a work in progress, which it is. Stacks of wood were out front on the sidewalk and inside against one wall. The counter is short - customers have a full view of the kitchen.
The menu is on the wall with sandwiches, hamburger variations, and other items - including a kid’s menu and combo variations. The prices seem a little high with the hamburger combos about $7.00. But the review on the citysearch sight said they were enough for two people which makes the price entirely reasonable. When I received the order - a combo (hamburger, fries, and drink) which we would share - and got home, the reviewer was not mistaken.
The mushroom burger that we had decided upon - when divided by two was quite enough for both of us. The combination of mayonnaise (which neither of us would purposely order), along with a cheese we would not have picked, made an excellent combination. I had rightly assumed that they would not have it on the menu if it had not been taste tested. The mushrooms were juicy and seemed sauteed even though they may have been on the grill with the burger. The bun was not too thick and not too thin, not too heavy and not too light, but just right.
This particular location was new and, as I said earlier, a work in progress. But we will do our part to make this restaurant successful by giving them repeat business. The hamburger filled a container that I have received full dinners in that would not have filled it as completely. The fries were in a similar container and filled it as much as the burger - maybe more so. The container in which our drink was placed would never fit in any drink holder of any car I have seen.
My wife and our three sons would have been able to share the drink and have plenty to compliment the dinner. Were I ordering for the whole family, two combos and an extra burger would have satisfied even our two teenagers without complaint. The fries are large from potatoes the size of which I have only purchased for huge baked potatoes. I would recommend requesting that the fries be well done - they would still not be overcooked.
There are also locations in Irving, Plano, Mesquite, and Garland. They are independent businesses, but they correspond and serve the same items the same way. It should not be long before someone opens one in Dallas proper. Until then it is worth a short drive from a Dallas residence. Try it and enjoy!
